Athlete Mentality

Written by: Lisa L.

Just because we have regular jobs, and no one is sponsoring our activewear addiction (sadly…) Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t consider ourselves athletes, take care of ourselves as an athlete would.

Through our eyes, we ‘go to the gym everyday’ and train…. But looking at the bigger picture, our sport is very intense. Not saying its better than other sports out there, but as Crossfitters, we have picked our poison so to speak, and its BRUTAL!

As we have established, yes, Tia trains 8 hours a day, and we ‘only train 1’, but is that an excuse to not fuel your body with the best food as she would, and to not stretch or roll out as she would, and do we not actually need just as much mobility and recovery?

After all, we are doing the same thing!

And before you say “Yes but Tia does more” … it really is all relative.

In relation to us, yes, she does a lot, and she does it well, but in relation to a regular person, our workload in the gym looks like pure insanity! Have you ever been speaking to a friend about being proud of how far your handstand push ups have come, and watch their face twist into an odd shape and ask:

‘You stand on your hands?!’

We are also loading the car at the shops (carrying all those damn bags in one load btw!), we are chasing kids, we are cleaning and cooking PLUS let’s not forget that full time job we have.

If you want to keep operating at this pace, you need to support it with appropriate actions.

Eating well AND ENOUGH to fuel your body properly for this style of training. Nobody likes the feeling of running out of energy (mid workout OR mid-day), or feeling flat. NO CARB/LOW FAT/3 meals a day etc need not apply here! Lucky, we have our very own Nutrition Coach on staff….

Stretching and mobility is also something that needs to be considered, yes, it’s time consuming and possibly even boring, but this stuff keeps us moving at our best in the gym, also stops the onset of backpain when driving to a holiday destination you deserve! Lucky, we have mobility training on Saturdays where you can learn some foam roller tips, or tricks to keep that sticky shoulder nice and loose…

We all want to chase our goals, whatever they may be, but I’m guessing they’re BIG if you are training! CrossFit isn’t your run of the mill ‘gym session’, we aren’t ‘exercising… we are TRAINING!’ Our method isn’t ‘gen pop’ …. YES CROSSFIT IS FOR EVERYONE but the reality is, it is extreme and whether you’re a member that competes regularly, or a member that pushes themselves to their damn limit every session… you are an athlete.

CrossFit builds better humans, forges elite fitness… and that’s you!

You’re a damn athlete, treat yourself like one.
